How to Measure a Wig Correctly: Head Circumference, Cap Size & Bangs Length – Step-by-Step Guide

Buying a wig online can feel tricky if you don’t know your exact size. A wig that’s too tight will be uncomfortable; one that’s too loose will slip and look unnatural. The good news? Measuring for a wig only takes 2–3 minutes, and you just need a soft measuring tape.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to measure head circumference, wig cap size, and bangs length perfectly—so you can order a wig that fits like it’s custom-made.

What You Need Before Measuring

  • Soft flexible measuring tape (not a hard ruler)
  • A mirror (optional, for accuracy)
  • Hair pulled flat (no high ponytails or bulky braids)

1. How to Measure Head Circumference (Most Important Measurement)

Head circumference determines the base size of your wig. This is the #1 measurement for a secure fit.

Step-by-Step:

  1. Place the start of the measuring tape at the center of your hairline (above your eyebrows).
  2. Wrap the tape around the back of your head, covering the occipital bone (the bump at the back of your skull).
  3. Bring the tape back to the front, meeting the starting point.
  4. Read the number in inches or centimeters.

Standard Wig Cap Sizes:

  • Petite: 21.5 inches / 54.6 cm & below
  • Average: 22–22.5 inches / 55.9–57.2 cm (most common size)
  • Large: 23 inches / 58.4 cm & above

Note: Most of our wigs come with adjustable straps, so the average size fits 90% of people.

2. How to Measure Wig Cap Size (Depth & Width)

To ensure the wig lays flat and covers your head fully, measure these 3 quick points:

A. Front to Back (Cap Depth)

  1. Measure from the front hairline down to the nape of your neck.
  2. This tells you the length of the wig cap.

B. Ear to Ear (Across Forehead)

  1. Measure from top of one ear, across the forehead, to top of the other ear.
  2. Ensures the wig fits naturally around your temples.

C. Nape Width

  1. Measure the width of the nape (back of your neck).
  2. Prevents gaps or tightness at the neckline.

3. How to Measure Bangs Length for a Natural Look

Bangs make or break your style! Measuring ensures your bangs aren’t too short or too long.

Step-by-Step:

  1. Decide your bang style:
    • Short bangs: above eyebrows
    • Medium bangs: at eyebrow level
    • Long side bangs: past eyebrows

  2. Measure from your front hairline down to your desired ending point.
  3. For wigs with curtain bangs or side bangs, measure diagonally for a blended look.

Pro Tips for Perfect Wig Fit

  • Always measure twice to confirm.
  • Keep the measuring tape snug but not tight.
  • If your measurement is between sizes, choose the larger size (you can adjust with straps).
  • For lace front wigs, focus on front hairline placement for the most natural look.
